After-School Activities

Concord Hill offers enriching after-school programs for Primary–Grade 3 designed to stimulate a child's natural curiosity and to provide opportunities for children to interact with friends in a study area of particular interest to them. Classes are held at Concord Hill School and meet once a week, unless otherwise noted.

Students are introduced to the world of chess through piece movement, board files/ranks, and notation. Participants develop their minds while learning how to apply different strategies for the opening, middle, and end game and acquire skill sets they can apply to all aspects of their lives for years to come.

CREATIVE DRAMA: Magic Suitcase Adventures

This class teaches students how to begin developing tools in their actor’s toolbox (body, voice, mind, and imagination). The instructor will bring a “magic suitcase” to each class and ask, "What will we find in our magic suitcase today? The books toys, and other props found in the suitcase determine where the students “travel” each day. Perhaps they will take a chilly trip to the Arctic, or explore the jungle with the help of the book, Where the Wild Things Are. Students will incorporate popular books as well as simple props and costumes to create characters and bring their own stories to life. Parents are invited to observe the last 30 minutes of the last class for an informal sharing/performance.

Students focus on motor movement and robotics activities using Lego Education products, We Do with Extension pack, and Simple and Motorized Machines based on their individual levels in a natural, step-by-step hands-on learning process. There will be new projects for the 2nd semester, so students who were enrolled in the 1st semester can also enroll in the second. New participants are also welcome.

Students are introduced to science and design technology concepts while building spinning tops, cars, rafts, and more. By playing with and manipulating the models, they experience pulleys, levers, gears, wheels, and axles while exploring energy, buoyancy, and balance. This is a great introduction to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a step-by-step hands-on learning process using Lego Education products. There will be new projects for the 2nd semester, so students who were enrolled in the 1st semester can also enroll in the second. New participants are also welcome.

Classes form a Tae Kwon Do curriculum that develops a child’s physical and mental abilities. Classes are fun but very structured and are always taught with the safety and well-being of each child in mind. Emphasis is based on exercising and learning Tae Kwon Do techniques at each child’s specific rank in a positive environment where each student can grow at his or her own individual speed and learn according to his or her needs. In addition to the physical abilities children are taught that Tae Kwon Do is a defensive martial art. The meaning and importance of the five tenets of Tae Kwon Do are emphasized: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit.
