Art

Art classes at Concord Hill provide an ideal learning opportunity for children to develop their problem-solving abilities, to integrate various areas of study and learning, to gain self-confidence in their creativity, and to learn to trust their own decisions.

In early childhood art education, the major emphasis is on process rather than product. Children are at various stages of developing their fine motor skills and their ability to “see” art and the world around them. Exposure to a variety of art materials, processes, and projects is used to learn about basic elements of art and design: line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. Our art experiences and projects are inspired by many sources including the classroom curriculum, artist studies, children’s literature, and the children’s interests as they evolve.

Music

Through music, the children enhance their listening and movement skills and frequently sing about subject matter introduced in their classrooms. Sound, rhythm, melody, tempo, beat, and pitch come alive to children as they sing, move, and play pitched and non-pitched instruments. Third graders expand their talents with weekly recorder lessons that stress note reading and ensemble playing.

Physical Education

As a vital piece of the Concord Hill curriculum, the physical education program stresses the value of individual children playing together as a group. Cooperative participation guides all activities and sports. Through individual and team activities, the children develop skills, demonstrate coordination, learn specific sports, and practice good sportsmanship.

Science

Through the progression of hands-on activities over the four years (Kindergarten–third grade) of science at Concord Hill School, the children learn to enjoy science, to support each other in their pursuit of scientific knowledge, and to grasp how science relates to their everyday experiences. Students become comfortable with the scientific method of inquiry while learning the rules for safe laboratory behavior.

Technology

Technology is used as a learning tool throughout the day at Concord Hill. Beginning in Kindergarten, students visit the media lab weekly to master the basic tools and processes of technology and to strengthen their classroom curricula. Children learn strategies for research, production, and skill development. They become computer literate in a cyber-safe environment.

Library

The Concord Hill School library supports students’ leisure reading and many of the topics presented in the regular classroom. Children listen to stories, participate in related discussions, and check out books. The library currently houses more than 6,800 volumes and periodicals for children, as well as a professional collection for teachers. We also maintain a special Parent Collection that includes books about parenting and child development. This collection is located in the waiting room by the Development Office on the main floor.
